OF LOCAL INTEREST

Welcome to the Crystal Coast in North Carolina! It is basically the coastline between Jacksonville and Atlantic, ‘Down East’. Beautiful, spacious, shallow sand beaches, a paradise for fishermen, and a pleasure for the rest of us to watch dolphins play in the water while pelicans and other birds fly up above

The weather? Well, here are the average high (F) temperatures:

Jan 55º
Feb 58º
Mar 65º
Apr 73º
May 79º
Jun 85º
Jul 89º
Aug 87º
Sep 83º
Oct 75º
Nov 67º
Dec 58º

We moved down here in September 1994, so you may wonder if the hurricanes didn’t give us a tough time? So far, we have encountered the followings boys and girls:

Bertha, July 1996
Fran, September 1996
Bonnie, August 1998
Dennis, September 1999
Floyd, September 1999
Isabel, September 2003
Charley, August 2004
Ophelia, September 2005

We watched them all - except Floyd - from our front door and have had no (zero !!!) damages to our home and no flooding! We’ve lost a couple of trees and some limbs, that’s all!

With Floyd, which looked awfully strong, we gave in to all the warnings and went to see our son Leif in Raleigh. Again, no damages here, but it took us 7 ½ hours to make the trip back home the next day. Most of the roads in eastern North Carolina were flooded!

LOCAL PICTURES

A growing collection of random pictures that Crystal Coast residents can relate to.

This picture from the beach s interesting for a couple of reasons.

First, it could not be taken now, because it shows the old Emerald Isle pier which was destroyed by the 1996 hurricanes.

I obviously took the picture before then, and had it blown up to poster size. The poster actually hangs on the wall here at my office - and what you see here is not the original picture but a digital photo of the poster!
