LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY
It may be because we are ‘foreigners’, but on the subject of distant places of earth, people may ask us, “have you been there?”
It also happens that the truthful answer is “yes” - with the additional phrase “but it was long ago.” Everything seems ‘long ago’ these days....
We’ve had the good fortune of traveling a lot in our younger days. When we lived in Europe there were so many different cultures and language groups so close to us. Can we say the same thing about different parts of the United States??? Certainly, to some degree.
Even if we have done some ‘flock sightseeing’, like “The white building in front of you is called The White House”, most of our travels have been of the low key, individual variety.
The modest level ambition in travel luxury in combination with some rudimentary knowledge of a couple of languages put us in contact with real people in many of the places we visited. Yeah, we have seen many of the ‘must see’ sights, but what I will try to tell you here are glimpses and anecdotes of everyday life as we happened to see them.
