MY SOAPBOX
I probably should start off by telling you that the gentleman in this picture is not me, but someone at ‘Speaker’s Corner’.
Haven’t heard of Speaker’s Corner? It is an institution in London, England, sometimes a little misleadingly referred to as ’Hyde Park Corner’. Yes, it is actually at one of the corners of that huge London park, but it is not at the Hyde Park Corner Underground station, but very close to ‘Marble Arch’.
Aren’t you glad we got that straightened out? Speaker’s Corner, though, is about as ’grassroots’ as you can get when it comes to public opinion.
Anybody can step up on his or her little platform, gather a few - or thousands - folks around them and deliver their message on everything. Well, there may be a few topics which are taboo, but almost anything goes - and the platform may very well be a soapbox, even though soap may only rarely be delivered in wooden boxes theses days. As you can expect, there is a lot of interaction between the speakers and their audiences, and it is a great show.
It is fun, listening to the speakers, passionate about their causes - or sometimes very toungue-in-cheek about them. I like to use that metaphor for this section of my web site. In the Observations and Opinions section, I certainly express a few personal opinions on things in our daily lives, but this one is a little different.
On my Soapbox I don’t necessarily comment on things as they are today, but I see no reason not to rant about the way I think things ought to be. A place to let off steam - and perhaps to get some folks to think twice about something they have taken for granted.....
